Critics argue that, rather than importing workers, the United States should focus on training its native-born population to pursue higher degrees of education or specialization in specific computer and technology-related fields. This is a challenge that should be met with gusto, and the latest trends suggest there has been a renewed interest in the science, math, and engineering fields. While emphasis on STEM education can often start in college, there is growing emphasis on starting STEM interest and education in elementary and middle school to cultivate more Americans towards the STEM field.

However, in an era of increasing global competition, immigrants and their skills can help the United States maintain a competitive edge over other countries by complementing the native workforce while spurring growth in key fields that have allowed the United States to lead in technological advances. This must be couched in the thinking that immigrants expand the innovative edge of the United States.

High-skilled immigrants whose successes are easy to identify and quantify play an important role in maintaining our economy, but so do low-skilled immigrants who come to work in lesser-known and lesser-paying jobs. Low-skilled immigrants, who often labor in difficult conditions picking our produce, landscaping our lawns, and cleaning our homes and offices, have added dynamically to the US economic landscape and are a part of who we are as America. Their intrinsic worth should not be measured by their capital output, though this may be the world’s standard. Rather, we should recognize that they, like high-skilled immigrants and native-born workers, bear the image of God and should be treated with the dignity and respect we would afford our Savior.
